Copterlab Kiel

The Copterlab Kiel was a project from the Institute of Applied Journalism (ifap) from the Faculty of Media of the UAS Kiel between 2015 and 2020.

Within the Copterlab Kiel, students and lecturers from the UAS Kiel dealt with the possibilities of multi-copters (drones) to create audio-visual content. In a mixture of theoretical research and practical application, the possibilities of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) were investigated and tested in experiments. Additional to mere aerial photos, the interaction of video copters, action cams (e.g. GoPros©) and conventional cameras were the focus of their research and application.

The Copterlab Kiel investigated technical, legal, aesthetical and narrative aspects of using video copters. The results were published in loose succession in a blog. The Copterlab Kiel was accompanied by a regular seminar at the Faculty of Media.

The team and the equipment of the Copterlab were available for student projects of all faculties and for student projects with external partners. After the project, the equipment was transferred to the stock of the Faculty of Media.

Additionally, a cooperation of the Copterlab Kiel and the J-School Kiel offered workshops and trainings on using video copters (drones) for journalism, PR, Corporate video, and many other areas of application.
