Bachelor’s degree in Media Engineering

(Graduation “Bachelor of Engineering”)

Overview

While classic engineering is still focused on the physical product itself, a digitalised economy more strongly demands user-orientation and a focus on functionality and service. Development and optimisation of products as well as accessing new markets remains important. Future job profiles will include software expertise and media literacy. Especially small and medium-sized companies will profit from engineers with additional interdisciplinary competencies and knowledge of .e.g. user-experience or data science.

The Faculties of Media, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the UAS Kiel are facing these challenges by offering a unique study programme in Germany. The interdisciplinary degree course in Media Engineering began in the winter semester 2018/2019 at the UAS Kiel. It consists of seven semesters (210 CP), which lead to a bachelor’s degree. Besides theoretical and practical modules, there is also a practical training element in a company in the 7th semester.

This degree course bridges media design with engineering and computer science. Students acquire skills in communication and design that enable them to participate actively in the production process from the management of requirements to modelling and testing of software architecture but also ethical issues.

In the first study year, project-based lecturing introduces the students to the professional field and the basic knowledge that is required to solve specific problems. In the second study year, the students acquire more comprehensive basic knowledge. The conception and realisation of prospective user interfaces such as augmented and virtual reality is part of the third study year. Focus is given to the lively development methods in heterogeneous and interdisciplinary teams. Additionally, the students have the possibility to set their own focus by attending various elective modules. Interdisciplinary project work, a ten-week internship in a company and the final bachelor thesis lead to graduation.

Job profile

The degree course in media engineering opens up various possibilities for graduates. They are qualified to design and establish IT solutions, apps, and internet- and hardware-related software but also to fulfil specialist and management functions in the economics sector. The definition of recommendations for actions in developing digital and media systems as well as a consulting are all part of the job profile. Media engineers understand the companies’ requirements and develop solutions regarding technical, organisational and economical aspects, they plan and manage projects and mediate between the specialised disciplines. Lastly, the students are able to moderate complex development strategies in interdisciplinary teams.
