Information on the mentoring programme for students

The interdisciplinary mentoring programme was established in the winter semester 2011/2012. Since then, a wide range of students have qualified to teach school graduates on career perspectives and study opportunities. The aim is to motivate young people with a migration background to consider starting a degree course.

We look for committed students who are interested in participating in the two-semester programme. Students from each faculty are invited equally whether they have a migration background or not.

Most importantly, you should enjoy interacting with younger people. Bilingualism can be an advantage especially in communication with pupils and parents.

A one-week course during the interdisciplinary weeks in the winter semester prepares the students for their advisory activity. Besides practising rhetoric and conversational skills, the issues of migration and intercultural competence are conveyed as well as information on study opportunities, university access and scholarships. The consultation in schools, cultural associations and at fairs can only be started after successfully completing the course.

There is supervision during the counselling period in case of problems and to exchange experiences. The module is interdisciplinary and lasts two semesters. After handing in proof of the counselling sessions, successful participation is rewarded with 5 CP and a certificate, which can be used in your CV.

Attending this programme connects you to different subject areas and degree courses. The project initiates several events on a regular basis. Assuming personal suitability, you could consider cooperating with school social work at the Toni-Jensen-Gemeinschaftsschule Kiel on a freelance basis for the City of Kiel.

The next qualifications for mentors will take place during the interdisciplinary weeks in the winter semester.
