I am Geoff Emerson. I have worked as a Probation Officer for forty years in and around Oxford in the UK. I am now retired and am lucky enough to be able to choose the pieces of work I find exciting, including teaching on the course at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences. For the last 15 years of my Probation Career and since my retirement, my main work interest has been in the field of Restorative Justice. This work has included:
- Managing a multi-disciplinary team of practitioners involved in research (2001 – 2004) to establish the effectiveness of RJ in reducing re-offending and improving victim satisfaction in the Criminal Justice System. (See Restorative Justice in Practice. Shapland et al 2008 – Routledge).
- Developing the use of RJ in Prison and Probation settings.
- Working as part of two EU funded collaborations across a number of EU countries which aimed to share best practice and improve victim’s access to RJ. I contributed articles about our findings which can be found at www.rjustice.eu
- I currently work in a large local prison training prisoners and staff (together) to use RJ approaches to prevent and resolve conflicts in prison.
My academic qualifications include a degree in Geography, a Diploma in Social Work and a post-graduate qualification in Probation Management.
