Data Science

Data Science is more than artificial intelligence

In the interdisciplinary Master's degree program Data Science, students learn how to use machine learning and artificial neural networks to make accurate predictions. In addition, they also develop an overall understanding of how data management, processing, analysis and visualization can be used profitably in data science projects.

  • Identify opportunities: Which problems can be solved? What are possible new products that can be created?
  • Realize innovations: Which data is valuable? Which AI algorithm achieves the best possible predictions? How can data science projects be realised in the cloud?
  • Incorporate data ethics and protection: How can companies protect sensible data? How can we ensure that AI is unbiased and explainable?

Students learn data science based on real-world use cases and can apply their knowledge using the relevant technologies and programming languages. This means they are ideally prepared to shape the future as data scientists in a wide range of industries.

Facts

  • Degree: Master of Science
  • Duration of studies: 3 semesters
  • Language of instruction: English (examinations optionally in English or German)
  • Enrolment: for the summer and winter semester (admission-free)

What characterizes the study program?

  • Practical relevance: Students not only learn theory, but also apply data science themselves. As part of an application project and their Master thesis, students solve real challenges faced by companies in various industries in northern Germany.
  • Contextual knowledge: Data science is more than artificial intelligence. Students gain an overall understanding of how to topics such as data management, machine learning, visualization and data ethics fit together.
  • Interdisciplinarity: The program was founded by all departments at Kiel University of Applied Sciences. This is reflected in a diverse student body (including computer scientists, engineers, natural scientists, psychologists, economists) and in cooperations with organizations from various sectors (including energy, medicine, public administration, media, telecommunications).
  • Compatible with part-time employment: all compulsory modules take place from Monday to Wednesday (see lecture schedule). This makes it easier to combine studies with part-time employment. 71% of students on the Master's degree program in Data Science state that they are working part-time.

Who is the program aimed at?

  • Bachelor's graduates from all subject areas: The program is aimed at graduates from a wide range of Bachelor degree programs, as data science skills are highly relevant to a wide range of industries.
  • Professionals: Regardless of whether you have recently started working or have been working for many years. The Master's degree program Data Science offers you the opportunity to get prepared in topics such as data analytics and artificial intelligence.

What are the requirements?

  • To be eligible for the program, 10 credit points (CP) in the field of mathematics and statistics, 10 CP in the field of computer science, and 30 CP in the two fields combined are required. Additionally, you need to provide proof of  English language skills. For more details on the requirements and the application process click here
  • If you have only acquired 180 CP in your bachelor degree, you must take supplementary modules by the end of the Data Science Master's program in order to make up the missing 30 CP. In principle, all courses from the Kiel University of Applied Sciences module catalog are eligible for this. It is also possible to credit internships, work experience and modules from your first degree that have not yet been credited. Click here for more information on how you can collect credit points.
