Workshop: DIY 3D printer

After the very successful workshop within the 5th interdisciplinary weeks [IDW] of the UAS Kiel in winter 2011/12, the CIMTT is again offering a 3D printer workshop for students. The seminar will take place within the 7th IDW.

We will build a 3D printer and compare the printing results to the industrial standard of 3D printers. The construction plans can be downloaded by everyone, according to the open-source system.

You can find 2D inkjet printers in almost every household in Germany. But when you talk about printing three-dimensional objects with the help of a 3D printer, you still get astonished looks. The CIMTT of the UAS Kiel has been working with this technology since 1998. We are successfully using it in technology transfer projects with industries in Schleswig-Holstein and have strong demands.

The offered workshop will analyse the necessary workflow to build a printer and give participants an understanding of 3D printing technology. Other technologies of CIMTT will be explained and used in practical exercises. The seminar is characterised by independent group work of the participants. At the end of the seminar, each group will present its project work in form of a PowerPoint presentation.

This blog serves as a diary of all experiences and documents the progress of student work while constructing a 3D printer.
