FAQs


This list of "Frequently Asked Questions" is supposed to help you in your application process. Although the "Application" page should show you the way to a successful application to the Master's Programme Information Technology, the FAQs (and their answers) will probably give you some more guidance.

  • What is the deadline for my application?
    Answer:
    There are no deadlines for the application. We are accepting applications all the year.
    But carefull: there are deadlines for the enrolment (see below)!
  • Which documents are required for my application?
    Answer:
    1. Certificate of Bachelor of Information Technology or equivalent degree with a minimum grade of 2.5 (in the German grading system), including a detailed transcript of grades
    2. Curriculum Vitae
    3. Proof of name change (e. g. marriage certificate)
    4. List in reverse chronological order the schools, colleges and universities attended. Specify the exact degree or other credentials in the words of original language (Please enclose all certified copies)
    5. In the case of an application for higher semester: Certificate of Study
  • How do I transfer my final grade to the German grading system?
    Answer:
    The calculation of your grade will be done by UNI-Assist (see below).

  • Where do I find the official application form?
    Answer:
    The application form is available in PDF format and can be downloaded from:

  • I did not receive my final bachelor's certificate yet. Can I hand it in later?
    Answer:
    You have to hand in your bachelor's with your application.
    In case that your institution needs more time to issue your final certificate, we require a provisional official certificate and transcript from your university.
  • To whom do I have to send the application?
    Answer:
    You have to send your complete application to

    Important:
    You have to pay (transfer) an application fee of 68.- Euro to UNI-Assist.
    Only after this payment they will start the verification process.

  • Do I have to send the application to Kiel University of Applied Sciences?
    Answer:
    No! You can send your application to us for an informal pre-check.
    The formal verification is done by UNI-Assist, only this is mandatory.
  • Do I have to send original documents for my application?
    Answer:
    No! Never send original documents. Send copies that are certified by an authorized notary public. Translations have to be done by certified translators.
  • Do I need an English language certificate?
    Answer:
    No! Currently you do not need to provide a language certificate.
    But remember:
    The teaching language is English. You have to be proficient in English.
    We recommend (minimum score) TOEFL (Internet-based) 79-80, IELTS 6.5.
    Important:
    Please check the requirements of the German Consulate where you are applying for the visa. You might have to supply a language certificate to them. Tests such as TOEFL (minimum score of 550 points for the paper based test or 213 points for the computerbased test) or IELTS (Band 6.0) could be required.
  • Do I need proficiency in German?
    Answer:
    Knowledge of German is not required, the master programme is completely taught in English.
    But German language knowledge is helpful for your stay in Kiel. Our institution is offering German language classes for all levels.
  • What are the deadlines for the enrolment (admission) to the master's program?
    Answer:
    Admission is possible twice a year:
    Summer Semester Enrolment: April 15
    Winter Semester Enrolment: October 15
    Contact us in case that you have special admission requirements (e.g. in case that your visa issue is delayed).
  • Do I have to pay tuition fees?
    Answer:
    No! There are no tuition fees.
    You have to pay a one time registration fee (currently 100.00 Euro) and an enrolment fee (currently 114.00 Euro per semester), which includes public transportation in the city of Kiel.
    Important:
    We do not accept any advance payments or payment in cash.
    Once you are in Kiel you can pay these fees at a local bank (e.g. using cash) before you enrol. Our admissions office will provide all the details to you.
  • Is there an institutional scholarship programme?
    Answer:
    No, we do not offer scholarship programmes. You may contact the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to apply for government funded scholarships:

  • How can I find accommodation in Kiel?
    Answer:
    Our institution does not offer any student dormitories. Student residence halls are managed by the Studentenwerk (offical Student Support Service)

    Private housing can also be found all over Kiel.
  • What is the cost of living for students in Kiel?
    Answer:
    Approximately 600.- Euro per month. (this includes approximately 200.- to 250.- Euro for accommodation).
  • Does the institution provide a pickup service for arriving students?
    No. A pickup service cannot be provided. Most students are arriving at Hamburg Airport. From there a convenient shuttle bus (called "Kielius") is going directly to the center of Kiel.

  • Can I can study for a Ph.D. degree with the master's degree awarded by Kiel University of Applied Sciences?
    Answer:
    Yes, but traditionally German Universites of Applied Sciences are not offering doctorate programs. The Ph.D. degree will be awarded in co-operation with a (traditional) university. The candidates will have two doctoral advisers, one in the degree awarding University and one at Kiel University of Applied Sciences where the research will be done.
