Social Participation

Social participation is the basic prerequisite for democracy and means equal living conditions, social justice, and integration of all people. It concerns diversity, inclusion, free initiatives which organise togetherness, the self-organisation of affected people and the free engagement of citizens. The nursing sector represents an important part of social participation. Compared to other European countries, Germany lags behind in nursing when it comes to issues such as academisation, responsibility for patient care and training. While in Great Britain, Sweden and the Netherlands, for example, the training and further education of nurses is part of the regular educational structures, in Germany it is subject to the education laws of the federal states (Länder). This often results in disadvantages in terms of financing, equipment and the qualifications of teaching staff. There is also a need for action in the areas of quality assurance and development.
